When Should You Call an Emergency Electrician?

Not every electrical fault needs an emergency visit, but some problems should not be ignored or repeatedly reset without finding the cause.

If there are signs of overheating, exposed live parts, repeated loss of power or another issue that could present an immediate electrical risk, it is sensible to have the installation checked by a qualified electrician.

Complete Loss of Power

If your property has lost power but neighbouring homes still have electricity, the fault may be within your own electrical installation.

We can investigate the consumer unit, incoming supply arrangements and individual circuits to help identify where the problem is coming from.

Circuit Breaker or RCD Keeps Tripping

A breaker or RCD that repeatedly trips is usually reacting to a fault somewhere on the circuit or connected equipment.

Repeatedly resetting it without identifying the cause is not a repair. Electrical fault finding can help determine whether the problem is caused by wiring, an appliance, moisture or another electrical defect.

Burning Smell or Signs of Overheating

A burning smell, melted plastic, discolouration or unusual heat around a consumer unit, socket, switch or electrical connection should be treated seriously.

Do not continue using electrical equipment that appears to be overheating or damaged.

Buzzing, Crackling or Arcing

Electrical accessories should not normally produce persistent buzzing, crackling or visible arcing.

These symptoms can indicate a loose connection, damaged accessory or another fault that needs investigation.

Damaged Sockets, Switches or Wiring

Broken sockets, exposed wiring, damaged cables or electrical equipment affected by water can create a risk of electric shock or further damage.

Avoid touching exposed electrical parts and arrange for the installation to be assessed.

Electrical Fault After a Leak or Flood

Water and electrical installations are a dangerous combination.

If water has entered sockets, lighting, wiring, a consumer unit or other electrical equipment, the affected circuits may need to remain isolated until they have been inspected and tested.

Not sure whether the problem is an emergency? Call Dan and describe what has happened. We can advise on the safest next step and whether an emergency electrical call-out is appropriate.

What Happens During an Emergency Electrical Call-Out?

When you call Dan Electrician with an urgent electrical problem, the priority is to understand what has happened, identify any immediate risk and get the installation into a safe condition.

Not every emergency can be fully repaired on the first visit, but we aim to identify the fault, make the situation safe and explain clearly what is needed next.

1. We Ask What Has Happened

When you call, we’ll ask a few straightforward questions about the problem.

This may include:

  • Whether the whole property has lost power

  • Which circuits are affected

  • Whether an RCD or circuit breaker has tripped

  • Whether there is a burning smell, heat or visible damage

  • Whether water has entered the electrical installation

  • Whether the problem started after using a particular appliance

This helps us understand the likely urgency before arriving.

2. Initial Safety Check

On arrival, we assess the affected part of the installation and look for any obvious signs of danger.

Where necessary, a circuit or piece of equipment may be isolated before further testing is carried out.

Once the immediate situation is safe, electrical testing can be used to narrow down the cause of the problem.

Depending on the fault, this may involve checking the consumer unit, protective devices, wiring, accessories and individual circuits.

The aim is to find the cause of the fault, rather than simply reset a breaker and leave.

4. Make Safe or Repair

Where a straightforward repair can be completed safely during the call-out, we’ll explain the work required before carrying it out.

If a permanent repair is not practical immediately, the affected circuit or equipment may need to remain isolated until further work can be arranged.

5. Clear Explanation Before Additional Work

If the fault requires additional materials, more extensive repairs or further investigation, we’ll explain what has been found and discuss the next step with you.

We won’t turn an emergency call-out into a list of unnecessary upgrades. The priority is to identify the problem, make the installation safe and recommend only the work that is actually needed.

Can Every Electrical Fault Be Repaired During the First Visit?

Not always.

Some faults can be identified and repaired during the initial call-out, while others may involve damaged wiring, inaccessible cables, specialist parts or a larger electrical problem that requires additional work.

Where a full repair cannot be completed immediately, we’ll aim to leave the installation in a safe condition and explain what needs to happen next.

Safety first. Diagnosis second. Permanent repair where practical.
