Replacing a consumer unit involves more than exchanging one box for another. For a home in Liverpool, Birkenhead or the Wirral, the important questions are how the existing installation will be assessed, what happens while power is off and which documents you receive afterwards.
An older rewireable fuse box may not meet current safety standards, but age alone does not prove the installation is unsafe. Its condition, protective devices, earthing and circuits should be assessed and tested before replacement is recommended.
Before the quotation
Explain any repeated tripping, noises, damage or planned additions. Discuss circuit identification, access to the board and the condition of the existing wiring. Ask what the quotation covers and how additional faults discovered during testing will be handled.
A consumer unit distributes the supply to individual circuits and contains their protective devices. Replacing it does not automatically require a full rewire, and a new board cannot repair damaged cables elsewhere.

What modern protection does
Circuit breakers protect against overload and short circuit. RCDs detect an imbalance in the current flowing through the intended conductors, and RCBOs combine residual-current and overcurrent protection. Their operating characteristics differ; protection should not be described as universally taking microseconds.
Individual RCBO protection can help limit disruption to an affected circuit, depending on the installation and fault. Surge protection can reduce risks from transient overvoltages without guaranteeing protection against every event.
Warning signs need investigation
Repeated tripping, buzzing, crackling, scorching or an unusual burning smell should be investigated. They do not prove that the board is overloaded or that replacement is the only answer. Do not remove covers or touch suspect equipment.
If you see smoke or fire, get out, stay out and call 999 from safety. Do not approach the equipment or try to tackle the fire. For overheating or exposed live parts without a fire, keep away and arrange urgent professional help.
Prepare for the power interruption
Agree the expected interruption with the electrician. Discuss refrigeration, home working, alarms and any medical or other essential equipment that depends on electricity. Clear safe access to the work area without touching electrical equipment.

During the replacement
Before work starts, the electrician assesses the existing installation and arranges an appropriate means of safe isolation. Any work involving the distributor's equipment must follow the relevant authorisation procedure. Circuits are inspected and tested, and any additional remedial work is discussed before proceeding.
The electrician identifies and disconnects the circuits, installs the new enclosure and suitable protective devices, and makes the connections in accordance with the design and equipment instructions. This is professional electrical work, not a household DIY task.
Inspection and testing establish whether the work meets the applicable requirements. This includes suitable checks before energising and further verification where required. If a fault prevents safe reconnection, the electrician should explain the findings and agree the next step rather than simply reconnecting it.
After the work: certification and notification
An Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC), with the relevant schedules, records the installation work and verification. Consumer unit replacement in England is also notifiable under Part P. Building Regulations notification is separate from electrical certification; agree the route before work begins and retain both sets of documents.
A suitably registered competent person can self-certify compliance and arrange notification through their scheme. Other permitted routes require arrangements with the appropriate body before work. See England's Approved Document P and the IET Wiring Regulations information.
Ask for the circuit labels, device instructions and an explanation of the test buttons and any limitations. Keep the paperwork with the property's electrical records.

How long is the power off?
As a planning guide, a standard 3-bedroom family home may require between 4 and 6 hours of on-site work, with electricity switched off for most of that period. This is a planning estimate, not a guaranteed completion time. Access, circuit condition and faults found during testing may affect the work; confirm the arrangements for your property.
Does replacement mean a full rewire?
No. Existing circuits may be retained where their condition and test results support it. Necessary repairs or replacement circuits should be explained and agreed. Board age, tripping or a planned EV charger does not by itself establish that a full rewire is needed.
