Electrical work planned around your kitchen

A kitchen plan shows where the cabinets go. The electrical plan also needs to consider how you will use the room, which appliances you have chosen and how their supplies can be installed and accessed. Discuss the electrics before fitting cabinets, tiling or decorating so the work can be coordinated with the rest of the refurbishment.

  • Sockets and appliance points: additional or repositioned sockets and connections planned around worktops, cupboards and the agreed appliance layout.

  • Cookers, ovens and induction hobs: assessment of the appliance requirements and existing supply before connection or new circuit work is agreed.

  • Kitchen lighting: ceiling, task and under-cabinet lighting, with practical switching arrangements and compatible fittings.

  • New or altered circuits: electrical work for the agreed layout, subject to the condition and suitability of the existing installation.

  • Protection and consumer-unit assessment: checks on the arrangements needed for the proposed work. A new kitchen does not automatically require a replacement consumer unit or a whole-house rewire.

If you need one appliance connected rather than a wider kitchen project, see cooker and oven installation. For individual additions, visit socket installation or lighting installation.

From your layout to the finished electrical work

1. Share the kitchen plan

Send your postcode, the proposed layout and the appliance makes and models if available. Explain whether you are keeping the existing layout, moving appliances or starting with an empty room. A sketch is useful if the kitchen design is still being developed.

2. Assess the installation and agree the scope

Dan checks the relevant existing circuits, protection, access and proposed cable routes. We discuss which accessories and fittings are to be supplied, the work included and any restrictions before confirming the quotation. The right solution may be an alteration, a new circuit or part of a larger rewiring project.

3. Coordinate access and installation

Agree when the electrical work should take place alongside cabinet fitting and other trades. Concealed cable routes can require access to walls, floors or ceilings. Discuss occupied rooms, appliances that must remain available and the expected power interruptions before work begins.

4. Test the work and explain the documents

The completed electrical work is inspected and tested, with the appropriate electrical certificate for its scope. Where Building Regulations notification applies, the relevant compliance documentation is also needed. Dan will explain what applies to the agreed work.

How much do kitchen electrics cost?

Kitchen electrical work is individually quoted. Repositioning a small number of points is a different job from installing several appliance supplies and a new lighting arrangement. A useful quotation needs an agreed layout and equipment list.

The price depends on the number of points and circuits, cable routes, access, chosen fittings, existing installation condition and the work required to complete the project. Tell Dan which items you will supply so the quotation can identify the electrical work and equipment included.

Plastering and decorating are not included in Dan's electrical work. Arrange those separately where required, and agree other access and making-good responsibilities before starting. Our guide to comparing electrical quotations explains what to check.

What to send for an initial quote

  • Your postcode and a short description of the kitchen project.

  • A kitchen drawing or sketch showing the proposed appliance, socket and lighting positions.

  • Appliance makes, model numbers and installation information, where available.

  • Photographs of the room and the consumer unit as it normally appears. Keep all covers in place.

  • Your intended timing, access restrictions and whether other trades are already booked.

These details help the initial discussion. A site assessment may still be needed before the scope and quotation can be confirmed.

Kitchen electrical questions

Can you alter the electrics without rewiring the whole house?

Often the work can be limited to the kitchen or the relevant circuits, provided the existing installation is suitable. We assess what can remain and what needs changing. Read about full and partial rewiring if the project extends beyond the kitchen.

Should I buy the hob and lighting first?

You can share the models you are considering before ordering. Appliance supply requirements, lighting compatibility and cable routes can affect the work, so it helps to discuss them while the layout can still be changed.

Does every kitchen electrical alteration need Building Regulations notification?

No. In England, the type of work determines whether notification is required; being in a kitchen does not by itself make every alteration notifiable. A new circuit or consumer-unit replacement is notifiable, while many alterations to existing circuits are not. Electrical safety requirements still apply. See Approved Document P for England.

Can you work with my kitchen fitter's schedule?

Send the proposed dates and explain what stage the kitchen is at. We can discuss access and the electrical stages before confirming availability. Avoid booking finishes over areas that still need electrical access.
